Hi, my name is Melissa! I am a motivated and creative individual with a passion for learning and growth.

One of my biggest strengths is my ability to think outside the box and approach problems from unique perspectives. I love challenging myself and exploring new ideas, which has led me to pursue a variety of interests over the years.

In my free time, you can often find me reading books, baking, or spending time outdoors, camera in hand. I am a lover of nature and enjoy hiking, camping, and exploring new places.

Professionally, I have experience in a variety of fields, including marketing, customer service, and project management. I am always looking for new opportunities to expand my skill set and take on new challenges.

I am a curious and driven individual who is constantly seeking out new experiences and adventures. I believe that with hard work, determination, and a positive attitude, anything is possible.

Bright Communications: January 2020 – Present

Bright Communications is a design & marketing agency located in Vancouver, BC. While my official title is ‘Marketing Assistant & Designer’, it’s definitely a ‘jack of all trades’ position where I do whatever the client needs and if I can’t do it, I learn it.

Position: Marketing Assistant & Designer
Responsibilities:

  • Social media account management, including creating content and responding to people
  • Answering emails on behalf of clients and taking necessary action based on email, such as registering a client in a class, arranging a private consultation for the client, or directing them to resources.
  • Updating websites with new information, such as blog posts, resources, workshops, or case studies
  • Creating a monthly newsletter, including updating information that is always included, finding new articles, and adding new information relevant to the newsletter audience
  • Design newsletter templates for clients in Mailchimp
  • Provide graphic design as needed, including ads, web graphics, and posters
  • Build on and maintain branding for clients
  • Editing video content for social media platforms
  • Keeping files organized on behalf of clients
  • Assisting with event/class planning details, such as tracking registrations, invoicing clients through PayPal, promoting the event, tracking rooming/food preferences, and tracking travel details

Trevor Battye Ad Sales: December 2020 – February 2024

Trevor Battye Ad Sales (TBA Sales) is an advertising sales agency. Clients included the Vancouver Writers Festival, Vancouver International Film Festival, Musicworks Magazine, and the Alberta Teachers Association.

Position: Musicworks Sales Manager
Duration: December 2020 – December 2023
Responsibilities:

  • Selling ad space in Musicworks’ print magazine, which is released three times a year
  • Selling digital ad space for Musicworks, including their social media, website, and monthly newsletter
  • Created a custom Mailchimp sales campaign to fit with existing Musicworks branding to keep advertisers up to date on booking deadlines and promotions
  • Ensured sales contacts were kept up to date

Position: Marketing Assistant
Duration: January 2020 – February 2024
Responsibilities:

  • Managed all incoming ads for various publications and festivals, all with their own specifications
  • Communicated with clients regarding their ad submission, including reminding them about deadlines and requesting revisions
  • Generated reports on how sales are going based on revenue, total ads sold, and how many of each ad size were sold
  • Ensured ad files are kept organized on Google Drive, with labels according to advertiser, publication/festival, and publication date
  • Create the occasional ad for a client using their provided materials

Langara LIST (Me to We) Volunteer Trip: August 2019

Part of the first (and only) Langara International Service Trip (LIST). The program focused on local and global cultural awareness, sustainability, and service.

  • Before arriving, completed 3 modules (online and in-person) to learn about service, sustainability, and culture
  • During the trip, learned about Me to We’s pillars of impact, worked on a social development project, and learned from the Indigenous people
  • Assisted in the construction of a new school
  • Post-trip, completed a reflection project to present to the college.

Clevers Media: April 2019 – December 2020

Clevers Media was an advertising and marketing agency, which later split into Bright Communications and Trevor Battye Ad Sales in January 2020. The work listed here is almost identical to the work listed under Bright Communications and Trevor Battye Ad Sales.

Pacific Rim Magazine: February – August 2019

Pacific Rim Magazine is a print and digital publication produced by the Langara Publishing program and distributed by the Globe and Mail. The magazine has students take on authentic roles for print and digital editions.

Position: Ad Traffic Manager
Duration: February 2019 – May 2019
Responsibilities:

  • Look over contracts submitted by sales students to ensure they were filled out correctly and check for any special placing requirements
  • Organize all incoming ads
  • Oversaw design and development of ads created by students in the PRM advertising team
  • Communicated with advertisers about the design and development of their ads, including acquiring assets and getting their approvals
  • Ensured all ads were accounted for in the magazine, including accommodating placement requests and ensuring ads didn’t interfere with the magazine design or content

Responsibilities:

  • Wrote environmental section feature titled “On the Rise”
  • Provided images for a listicle titled “Food Street”
  • Provided images for an article about Spartan Books

Position: Media Team Member
Duration: May 2019 – August 2019
Responsibilities:

  • Interviewed both current and former publishing program students
  • Generated interview questions that highlighted the program and provided insight into day-to-day student life for prospective students
  • Set up cameras for the interviews
  • Coordinated interview times with students to work within their schedule, the media team’s schedule, and room availability
  • Edited footage using iMovie
  • Uploaded finished interviews to the PRM website and YouTube channel
  • Prepped images for web usage by reducing their size
  • Edited additional article images that could not fit in the magazine, but could fit on the website

Langara S.W.A.P: February – May 2019

The Langara Student Work Assistance Program (S.W.A.P) helps students find work around the college that suits their skill set. I was placed with Langara’s Alumni Department to interview alums, then write and edit their stories.

Position: Editorial Assistant
Responsibilities:

  • Interview selected alumni either in person or over the phone depending on their availability
  • Write short stories about what that alumnus has been up to since their graduation
  • Edit fellow student’s stories
  • Attended Langara’s 49th-anniversary party as a volunteer in the Alumni Department’s section

Roger’s Aquatic & Pet Supplies: 2006 – May 2018

Position: Manager
Duration: January 2017 – May 2018
Responsibilities:

  • Resolve employee conflict
  • Create original social media content for Instagram and Facebook, as well as respond to any inquiries received via social media
  • Order livestock, live food, and dry goods
  • Open & close the store, including cashing out the register
  • Schedule cleaning and feeding days for the animals
  • Develop care sheets for reptiles and fish to set customers up for success as well as educate employees on the livestock

Position: Sales Associate
Duration: 2006 – May 2018
Responsibilities:

  • Assist customers with pet care needs
  • Maintain reptile enclosures, including daily/weekly feeding and cleaning, as well as decorating terrariums
