According to the Nature Conservancy (@ncc_cnc) short-eared owls have had a population decrease of almost 30% in the last 10 to 12 years, thanks to the usual suspects: habitat loss and degradation on their wintering grounds and some breeding sites. They typically choose habitats such as the Arctic tundra, grasslands, marshes, meadows, prairies and open woodlands. In Canada, only 25% of our grasslands remain, affecting not only short-eared owls, but 57% of the bird species population that depends on it, and 87% of species dependant on native grasslands.
